Car rental at the port of Dakar — ferry terminal

Three quays, three journeys: the cruise call that lasts a single day, the Casamance boat that leaves in the evening, and the Gorée ferry that leaves every hour. In all three cases, the car starts or ends its journey here.

Three ways to arrive here, three different needs

Visitors are not looking for the same thing depending on which quay they are on.

Port call

You are coming off a ship

Your ship is calling for the day: eight to ten hours, no more. A car picked up at the quay puts Gorée, Lac Rose or the Plateau within reach without relying on a shore excursion — and without getting back late.

Casamance

You are leaving for Ziguinchor

The boat sails in the evening. Two options: you return the car here before boarding, or you take it on board with you and keep driving on the other side.

Gorée

You are crossing for the day

Twenty minutes by ferry. The car stays in the ferry terminal car park during your visit, and you leave with it in the evening towards Dakar or the Petite Côte.

The Casamance boat: what to know before booking

The Dakar – Ziguinchor sea link is operated by COSAMA. It matters, and not only for comfort: it avoids crossing the Gambia, meaning two borders, two ferries and a whole day's drive.

Above all: a vehicle can be shipped. You pick up the car here, board with it, and collect it in Ziguinchor in the morning. It is the only way to have a vehicle in Casamance without having driven two days to get it there.

What this changes for a rental

A car picked up in Dakar and returned in Ziguinchor is a one-way rental, with return fees. A car picked up in Dakar, shipped, and brought back to Dakar on the way back is an ordinary rental — no one-way fees, no repatriation. Tell us which boat you are taking: the quote is not the same.

A port call is one day — and only one

A ship calling at Dakar leaves the same evening. Passengers have eight to ten hours and one absolute constraint: be back on board before departure. Everything else — price, model, comfort — comes second.

Give the ship's name and departure time when booking: hand-over and return are agreed with the owner according to the ship's schedule.

Gorée: twenty minutes, and the car waits for you

The ferry leaves from the ferry terminal. The crossing takes about twenty minutes and sailings are frequent during the day. The island is explored on foot: the car stays in the car park during your visit, and you leave with it in the late afternoon.

It is the outing that opens most stays. It needs no driving, but it does need you to be there — and the ferry terminal is not an easy place to reach without a vehicle, especially with luggage.

Location Sénégal — accommodation

Where to stay, before or after the crossing

A boat leaving at 8 p.m. and a flight landing at 2 p.m. never fall on the same day. There is almost always a night to fit in on one side of the crossing or the other — and two towns to cover, not one.

Staying near the Plateau

For the night before boarding: a few minutes from the ferry terminal, luggage and all.

Staying in Ziguinchor

The night you arrive, after a crossing that ends in the morning. Cap Skirring is still two hours away.

Villas in Cap Skirring

The boat's real destination. This is where the shipped vehicle really makes sense.

Que Faire Sénégal

What you can do with the day you have

This is the port's own question: time is limited and known in advance. Que Faire Sénégal sorts outings by real duration — half a day, a day, two days — rather than by theme. For a passenger on a port call, it is the only sorting that helps.

Gorée in half a day

The crossing, the House of Slaves, the castel. Enough to be back on board well in time.

Dakar in a day

The Plateau, the Corniche, the Mosque of the Divinity, the Almadies: enough to fill a port call without leaving the peninsula.

Casamance

Cap Skirring, Oussouye, the islands: what the boat makes possible when you have more than a day ahead of you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the rental car on the Ziguinchor boat?

Yes, if the owner agrees, and it is often the best solution for a stay in Casamance. Tell us when booking: the contract and the insurance must mention it, and the vehicle ticket is bought from the shipping company, not from us.

How long before departure must I return the car?

Give your ship's schedule when booking: the return is agreed with the owner, with a comfortable margin before boarding.

Is there a car park at the ferry terminal?

Yes, and that is what makes a day on Gorée easy: the car stays there during the crossing. Parking is not included in the rental.

Can I pick up the car at the port and return it at the airport?

If the owner agrees: it is arranged before booking. A one-way rental may add fees — they show in the basket before payment, never after.

How much do I pay when booking?

20% of the order total, online, when you book. The balance is paid when the keys are handed over.
