Getting around Dakar, and getting out

In Dakar itself, the issue is not power but congestion. The Plateau is hard to park in, the Corniche and the VDN jam at the same hours, and a city car does better there than a big vehicle — less fuel, more parking spaces, less manoeuvring.

What changes the reasoning is leaving town. Lac Rose, the Saloum tracks, laterite after rain: as soon as the week leaves the tarmac, ground clearance becomes the only feature that really matters. That is the one real trade-off on this page, and it is the one visitors come looking for.

A third case, more common than you might think: the stay that remains in town but runs long. Beyond two weeks, the length-of-rental discount weighs more than the category, and it is better to take something smaller for longer.

One thing we don't know

The state of a track depends on the season and the last rain. We cannot tell you what condition the one you plan to take next week will be in. The vehicle's owner often knows it: ask them on WhatsApp before booking — that is exactly what the channel is for.

Do you need a 4×4 to get around Dakar?

Where do I collect the vehicle?

At the pick-up point chosen in the search — Plateau, Almadies or airport. The pick-up point is an area: the exact address is agreed with the owner on WhatsApp once the booking is confirmed.

How much do I pay when booking?

20% of the order total, online. The balance is paid when the keys are handed over. Nothing else is charged in between.

Is an international driving permit required?

Your national licence is enough for a tourist stay, with an ID document. The driver must be the person named on the booking; a second driver can be added as an option.

Can I take the vehicle out of the country?

It depends on the owner and the vehicle, and it must be agreed before booking. Ask on WhatsApp: a border crossing cannot be improvised, neither for the papers nor for the insurance.
