Car rental in Saint-Louis
Saint-Louis is a northern city rarely visited on its own: you come for its listed island, but you leave again for the Langue de Barbarie, the Djoudj park or the river as far as Podor. Having your own car here means linking up places that no scheduled service reaches conveniently. This page sets out what the North asks of a vehicle, where the handover takes place, and what you will do with the car once you are there. Booking is online: you pay 20% of the total when you order, as the introduction fee; the balance is paid locally, when you collect the keys.
Where to start
Each need has its own page: start with the one that fits you.
Arriving from Dakar
The drive can be done in a saloon, but it is long: better to prepare for it. Our article covers the Dakar – Saint-Louis route in detail.
Read the routeA rental of a few days
The right length for a stay in Saint-Louis: time for the city and an excursion to the Djoudj or along the river.
/short-term-car-rental/A long rental
For an assignment, a move or a stay that stretches out in the North.
/long-term-car-rental/A 4×4, for the tracks
Useful beyond the tarmac: the Langue de Barbarie, the approaches to the Djoudj, laterite tracks. In the city, a city car is enough.

Getting around Saint-Louis and the North
The city rests on three areas linked by bridges: the island of Saint-Louis, the listed historic heart; Sor, the mainland town where you find the bus station and the main markets; and the Langue de Barbarie, that strip of sand between the river and the ocean. Within that triangle everything is short, and a city car moves easily on surfaced roads. The car becomes genuinely useful as soon as you want to leave the city, because that is where the North stretches out.
Around it, distances grow and surfaces change. The Djoudj park, a bird sanctuary open from November to June, lies some sixty kilometres to the north, and its last kilometres are on a track. The Langue de Barbarie, to the south, mixes tarmac and sand. Inland, the road follows the river as far as Podor, through Sahelian landscapes where fuel stations thin out. It is this hinterland, not the city, that decides the type of vehicle.
One thing to take on board before even choosing the car: Saint-Louis has to be earned by road. From Dakar the motorway stops at Thiès; beyond that it is the N2, surfaced but running through villages, with speed bumps and checkpoints. Reckon on half a day rather than a quick hop, set off early, and plan to sleep there rather than attempt the round trip in a day. A stay spread over two or three days is the right size for the North.
One thing we don't know
We do not run a desk in Saint-Louis, and we do not map the fuel stations of the hinterland. The car belongs to a private owner or a professional rental company: the handover is agreed directly with them, over WhatsApp, once the booking is confirmed. And for trips towards the Djoudj or the river, where stations are far apart, caution is worth more than a map we do not have: fill up in the city and do not drop below a quarter of a tank.
Where to collect the car
The island of Saint-Louis
The listed historic centre, where the hotels and guesthouses are concentrated. Handy if you are staying on the island; the streets are narrow and a small car parks more easily.
Sor, the mainland town
Denser, with the bus station and the markets: the side you enter and leave the city by, convenient if you are arriving from Dakar.
The Langue de Barbarie
The strip of sand between river and ocean, on the waterfront accommodation side: to be agreed with the owner depending on the state of the access.
Resident or visitor: not the same price
You live in Senegal
The resident rate shows up on its own
All you need is a resident account: the resident rate of the renters taking part in the programme then shows up on its own, on the vehicle as well as on the options and in the basket, with no code and no paperwork. Your status is checked once, by phone, and never asked for again.
You are visiting
The public rate, and the length-of-rental discount
No resident rate, but the lower daily rate on longer rentals works for everyone: the longer the rental, the lower the daily price. It is often the best lever on a two-week stay.
The longer, the cheaper
7 days
first tier, triggered by a full week.
14 days
the tier that really changes the total of a stay.
21 days
beyond that, you are into long-term logic.
30 days
the monthly rate, to ask for directly.
The actual discounts are those the owner has entered for their vehicle: they show in the basket, not here.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Dakar to Saint-Louis?
Three and a half to four and a half hours for around 260 kilometres. It is not the distance that makes the journey long, but getting out of Dakar, the villages the N2 runs through beyond Thiès, their speed bumps and the checkpoints. Setting off early is the only real lever, and it is better to sleep there than to drive back at night.
Do you need a 4×4 in Saint-Louis?
Not for the city, which is covered in a city car on surfaced roads. An off-roader becomes useful for the surroundings: the last kilometres towards the Djoudj park, some access points on the Langue de Barbarie, the tracks towards the river. Choose according to what you intend to do outside the city.
Where do you collect the car?
There is no desk: the handover is agreed with the owner, over WhatsApp, once the booking is confirmed. It usually takes place around where you are staying, on the island, in Sor or on the Langue de Barbarie. Any constraint on time or place should be raised with the owner before booking.
Can you drive to the Djoudj?
The park lies some sixty kilometres to the north and is open from November to June. The road ends in a track: check its condition for the season of your trip, and plan for a suitable vehicle if you leave the tarmac. Fill up before setting off, as stations thin out towards the north.
Is there a resident rate?
With the rental companies that offer one: each decides whether to apply a resident rate, and how much. Once your resident account is verified, it appears on its own on the vehicles concerned. Longer rentals, common for an assignment in the North, benefit from a lower daily rate expressed as a percentage and set by the owner.
